  1. We have a dog, named Molly. She is a large yellow lab but almost white she is so light. She is larger than her mom, now at 77 pounds. But, I love her like she was little, she is so sweet and sound. I totally understand your little dog dreams! Don’t you wish you could know what they were thinking? I know I do! Thanks, Fran!

    • We had yellow Lab for four years and I miss him terribly (the only one in my family who does, yikes – poor big barky boy). Dennis is little, ten pounds – he curls up like this, only on my husband’s side of the bed, while I am getting dressed in the mornings. I think it is the peace I covet! I do wish I knew what he was thinking – lots of clever things in that busy brain.

  2. Fran, this is so sweet. I love your rhyme and rhythm! When read aloud I really hear your alliteration, consonance, and rhyme. Won’t your students love this poem. I love puppies. However, I am allergic to dogs. Last April, when my nephews were home from school learning virtually, my sister-in-law was home teaching virtually, and my brother-in-law was home working virtually, they brought a golden doodle puppy home. My favorite dogs! In June, we were finally able to take the 3 1/2 hour drive to visit them and I fell in love with my new nephew, Duke. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 we haven’t been able to see our family and Duke since them. Duke has the sweetest personality and has brought all of them much love and comfort. I’m hoping we will be able to see him this summer or sooner.

One of our cats, Chip, who I called Pinky Boy, used to catnap on his back. In his sleep he would stretch out one front paw at a time. We would laugh and I asked him what are you dreaming of, Pink? Our seventeen-old cat, Lovee snores when she’s napping. Thank you for sharing your poem and photo of Dennis.

    • Thanks for your words, Gail. In contrast – I am allergic to cats! I know the doodles to be such delightful creatures and a gift to allergy-riddled folks who long for a dog. You have such great stories here – amazing how one thing leads to another and another, like a grid in the mind lighting up. That’s the power of writing (if you haven’t already, copy & save your comments for future endeavors!).

  3. Dennis is soooo sweet! Very poem-inspiring 🙂 Our dogs often will sleep very very lightly, ready to respond to threats or food or family coming down the stairs at a moment’s notice. I like when they finally sleep soundly enough to make little noises or twitch their legs.

    • Dennis is a sweet boy with a streak of mischief. He runs and plays hard, then sleeps deeply, usually because he’s snuggled up tight to one of us. He sometimes makes tiny whimpers… making me wonder, what is he seeing? A treat just out of reach-? He sometimes trembles in his sleep and doesn’t have much leg to twitch, lol! He burrows on my husband’s pillows in the mornings when I am getting dressed – took me awhile to get this photo of him, so endearing and peaceful.

  4. I no longer have a dog, but remember each one from the past, those “doggy dreams” they seemed to have when I noticed the little movements and sometimes growls. I love the rhyming & just-right poem that tells all, Fran.

    • The dream-movements, whimpers, and growls are intriguing for sure – mostly our Dennis sleeps peacefully; it was with great stealth that I obtained this shot! I’ve wanted to write to it for a while. Thank you, Linda, for your words about the little poem.

  5. I had a dachshund named Isabel. She loved to curl up in cloth, bury her nose in it, and she had a distinct sleeping smell. I miss her, but the love of my life now is a schnoodle named Charlie.

    • These little dogs crave warmth and closeness. So intriguing, the “distinct sleeping smell.” Must investigate! I know your Charlie is a true joy. My son says pets are a reminder of what Eden was and what we have to look forward to.

  6. Fran, I could curl up with doggie snuggles after reading your sweet poem but I have no dog. My husband is allergic and my own children did miss the wonders of doggie friendship. So glad that you have such a darling dog to curl up with. Love this photo. I think it should be in Winter’s Embrace 2021 for all the dog lovers. What do you think?

    • I think Dennis and I would be honored with a place in Winter’s Embrace! He is, after all, taking a winter’s nap. He offers his warmth and coziness throughout the coldest and dreariest of days. Maybe it would be a heartwarming surprise for dog lovers. Thank you, Carol.

    • Praying for your friend, Nanc. I hope she will write, maybe even a letter or poem to her lost beloved dog – so, so sad. My son (who’s a pastor) and I were talking this week about the unconditional love dogs have for their people, and how their souls are right there in their eyes. Special creatures sent to enrich our lives…with a touch of eternity in it. My son says: “I’ve decided that pets are a glimpse of what Eden was like. Helps us to see what was and what will be.” I hope this helps bring a little peace to your friend in her heartache. It is terrible to lose a dog 💔

    • I had such fun with those word choices, Laura. I have a dog category on my blog and have written stories, even a letter to a priceless little friend and companion, but not many poems. Something to work on. Happy Valentine’s Day!

  7. “curled up cream” is just perfect. What a sweet photo and a lovely poetic pondering. I’d love a peek inside my cat’s dreams –though they might be a bit too feathered tooth and claw now that I think about it. I think it’s a safer bet that your dog’s dreams are something to covet.
