  1. This is devastatingly sublime and profoundly symbolic of our attempts to make sense of the senseless. I wish there were no occasion for you to write this, but there is, and you offer something that we all will need.

    • Thank you, Paul. There are almost no more words left to express the sorrow. Lines of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” come to mind:

How many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn’t see?

How many deaths will it take ’til he knows
That too many people have died?

      Children…

  2. Perfect poem for the horrible and senseless loss of lives that have been happening, again. I like your repetition of “broken”. I agree on the lines of “Blowin’ in the Wind” coming to mind. Our youngest daughter will be doing her student teaching in Buffalo, NY where a recent 18-year-old shooter shot many people in a grocery store. Luckily, our daughter won’t be living or teaching anywhere near that area. However, it makes me think no one is really save no matter where they are. So Sad.

    • I think the words “heartbroken” and “senseless” are the ones most echoed in the wake of Uvalde. It’s hard to express the depth of horror and sadness. Things must change…and thank you always for your words, Gail.

  3. How simply and starkly beautiful and perfectly on point. Fran, you inspire me and comfort and make me see possibilities even in the word, ‘heartbroken.’ Thank you.
