Hummingbirds are made of air

a found poem from the introduction of
The Hummingbirds’ Gift: Wonder, Beauty, and Renewal on Wings
by Sy Montgomery

hummingbirds
are made of air
(nine air sacs
two huge lungs
enormous heart)

everything
about a hummingbird
is diaphanous

two infant,
orphaned hummingbirds
as delicate as froth

a resurrection story

    • Thank you – all credit goes to Montgomery for the penning of those ethereal lines; I just found ’em and put ’em in a poem. They’re all from the intro alone -! Stunning book. Oh, what a phrase, “God’s calligraphy” – also stunning. As are the tiny birds themselves!

    • It is beautiful, and as part of a found poem they are Montgomery’s words from the intro of her book, in regard to rehabbing orphaned baby hummingbirds the size of bees. “Delicate as froth” for sure – I cannot even imagine hand-feeding them!
