Hey, Beaver

On Sunday I wrote a poem about my weekday commute being my “breathing place.”

The poem starts like this:

Along the road
among the trees
the wild things live
and wait for me

That day, we had torrential rains in our neck of the woods.

The next day, as I drove to work, right smack in the middle of the road, a wild thing was waiting for me, all right.

Well, hey, Beaver:

Covered in mud and what looked like bits of bark, the Beaver considered me (or my car, anyway) for a moment before carrying on with its business. Building, I suspect. Possibly home repairs. Maybe it just needed a breathing place for a minute, too…a break from all the dam work.

(Sorry, y’all – couldn’t resist having a little pun).

  1. It’s a great pun and video. I’ve seen beavers in the water, but never on the road– I don’t think even walking around. Love the connection to your poem from last week. You got a little extra breathing time.

  2. Love the pun, love the video, love that your wild things wait for you. I’m glad that you are always on the lookout for them, too, since that could be a tragic risk for him if someone wasn’t watching. What a cute little guy! He’s probably building the next Buc-ee’s right there…….(oops, let’s hope not).

  3. How great to meet a beaver (makes me think of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe!) Love the pun and the deliberate way it walks and makes an obvious decision to turn around and go back where it came from! Encounters with wild things are so precious.

    • I was hoping someone would think of Narnia, Celia! It was all I could do to not reference it or to call this wild friend Mr. Beaver. Those books were my childhood favorites – in fact, my favorites to this day. I left. large peice of my heart in Narnia long ago and it has called to me ever since 🙂

  4. Your writing comes to life, Fran. I’m remembering the one about the bald eagle you wrote as well (is it the same one? I’m in the middle of getting over a vacation hangover so my brain is a bit mushy). Your well placed pun made me laugh.

    • Thank you for your comment, Alice – as to your question (lol): The line “wild things wait for me” is from my “breathing place” poem posted on 3-18. The eagle poem, about the sighting in the tree when I needed encouragement, was earlier. Nevertheless…write of wild things and the wild things come!
