In the midst of a trying workweek
while fighting a cold,
exhaustion, despair
a last-minute supper decision
led to a country restaurant
for the healing power of
chicken ‘n’ dumplings
and collards that tasted
exactly like Grandma’s
—God, I miss her so

Sending hope for a better week and that memories of your loving grandmother continue to feed your soul. Despair? Oh dear. May the Lord hear your prayers and bring you that peace that passes all understanding.

Food is so evocative. Eggplant parmigiana makes me think of my own grandmother, who helped me through that recipe when I was young.
I always enjoy your poetry. I hope you feel better.

Fran – your comfort food is healthy – this month mine has been anything with melted cheese and fall flavor ice cream (pumpkin, apple, brown sugar) – and I’m dreaming of a large casserole of stuffing. Do you know I queried some Kindergarten and 1st graders and only 2 knew what stuffing was? What a shame!

Chicken ‘n’ dumplings has to be my all-time favorite comfort food. Unfortunately, I never learned how to make it just like Mama or my oldest sis could. I’m always in search of restaurants with it on the menu, but it never measures up. Just one of the many things I’ll be asking for when I reach the other side.
Hoping you’ve reached the other side of your cold, exhaustion, and despair.
